Debris from new Jowai Bypass blocks River Myntdu, creates panic for nearby houses
Following the incessant rain caused by Cyclone Remal, Jowai witnessed a major debris flow, which blocked the flow of the Myntdu River, causing it to overflow. This incident created panic among residents living near the river as the rising water reached their houses.
The incident occurred around 1 PM on Wednesday. Fortunately, no one was injured.
It may be mentioned that on Friday last, May 24, the District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills halted the construction of the new Jowai bypass (Treiongriang to Khliehtyrshi) until suitable measures are adopted to prevent the flow of debris into the Myntdu River. The order, issued under the provision of Section 144 CrPC, was necessitated as it was observed that the quality of water in the Myntdu River and its tributaries was severely affected and muddy due to erosion and the depositing of debris in the important catchment areas of the Myntdu River.
Due to the flow of earth from the ongoing construction work, the water of the Myntdu River turned muddy, leading to contamination of the water facilities of the PHE Jowai and the subsequent supply of muddy water to households in Jowai Town. However, on Wednesday, the debris flow into the Myntdu River blocked the flow of water.
Interestingly, residents of West Jaintia Hills experienced waterlogging on a bridge along the Myntdu River, which made it difficult for vehicles to cross. This bridge is the main bridge for Jowai and nearby villages located on the Shillong-Jowai road. This waterlogging exposes the lack of proper drainage or maintenance by the PWD, causing water to flow onto the surface of the road.
