Court remands KSU leader to 6 days police custody in Ichamati murder cases
A leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) was arrested on Saturday for his alleged involvement in the Ichamati murder cases.
Ostarnic Marbaniang, assistant finance secretary of the KSU was picked up from his residence at Jaiaw.
He was taken to Sadar police station and later produced before the court, which remanded him to six days police custody.
So far four KSU members have been arrested in the Ichamati murder cases.
Earlier, members of the KSU assembled outside Sadar police station amid tight security.
East Khasi Hills SP Rituraj Ravi said, “In connection with Shella P.S. Case No. 08(04)2024 and Shella P.S. Case No. 09(04)2024 u/s 302/34 IPC, where Late Ishan Singh and Late Sobir Dutta was murdered in Ichamati, one accused person, Osternic Marbaniang (34) S/O Smt. Tila Marbaniang R/O Jaiaw, Laitdom, Shillong was arrested on 27.04.2024 from Jaiaw.”
“We, further, appeal to the people to maintain peace and order,” he said.
He also warned, “All miscreants who act in a manner to breach law and order will be strictly dealt with as per law.”
On the law and order situation, Ravi said, “We are prepared to tackle any problem.”
On March 27, two persons were allegedly beaten to death by miscreants at Ichamati. They have been identified as (L) Esan Singh and (L) Sujit Dutta. Both are labourers working in limestone quarries. Their bodies were found at Ichamati and Dalda respectively.
According to the FIR filed by family members of the deceased victims, the incident took place during an anti-CAA protest in Ichamati.
Recently, another KSU member was arrested for his involvement in the killing of a daily wager at Mawlai Mawroh.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up and patrolling has been intensified to prevent any untoward incidents in and around the state capital.
