Conrad Sangma expresses confidence to win both Lok Sabha seats
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed confidence that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will win both the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats.
“I have been taken reports from everywhere and it has been very positive. We are getting positive reviews from all the constituencies and we are confident that we will come out successful in this election,” Conrad said after casting his vote on Thursday.
Former MP Agatha K Sangma and former Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh are common candidates of the MDA which is backed by regional political parties including the BJP.
Agatha is contesting on the National People’s Party (NPP) symbol against former chief minister and Congress nominee Mukul Sangma from Tura parliamentary seat while Jemino of the UDP is seeking to unseat Congress MP from Shillong seat Vincent H Pala.
Admitting that the opposition is working very hard, Conrad said, “We wish everyone the best and we will see what happens on May 23.”
Meanwhile, the chief minister has disagreed with the allegation made by the opposition Congress that there is a threat to democracy and said, “The entire process of election is democratic so I don’t think there is any threat to democracy.”
He said in fact the past government was also elected democratically and even now the process is happening democratically.
“So I don’t see any reason why the opposition has to bring out these kinds of slogans that there is threat to democracy as every election process is a democratic process and it has been happening in a free and fair manner,” Conrad said adding “Whoever the public desires and get majority will run the country.”
