CM says govt will discuss on CAB with the Centre
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said the issue related to the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) will be discussed with the new government at the Centre.
“We will be discussing with the new government to ensure the interest of the people in Meghalaya in particular and North East in general is protected,” Sangma told reporters here while reacting to a query on the move of the BJP to implement the CAB.
Earlier, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government had passed a cabinet resolution to oppose the CAB, which seeks to provide citizenship to immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The National People’s Party (NPP), which is an ally of the BJP-led NDA government, had also led a delegation of North east-based political parties to oppose the CAB.
Asked on the stand of the party, Sangma said, “I think there is a new government now in the centre and whatever issues that are there we will discuss this matter with them and will figure out how we should move forward by ensuring that all stakeholders and different issues concerning the state and the people out here is always taken into consideration before taking any step or action.”
