Climate-resilient millet farming discussed at CCS, CAU-Imphal, Tura workshop

The College of Community Science (CCS), Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Tura, Meghalaya, hosted a regional workshop on “Challenges and Opportunities in Millet Cultivation – NER Perspective” on March 17. The event, organized in collaboration with the All India Coordinated Research Project on Sorghum and Millets and ICAR-Indian Institute of Millet Research, Hyderabad, aimed to promote millet farming in the Northeastern Region.
Dr. PL Patil, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, attended as the Chief Guest, while Lalit Sharma, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), Tura, was the Guest of Honour. The workshop was presided over by Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, Tura.
Over 130 farmers from various districts of Garo Hills participated, receiving 50 kg of millet seeds and 100 litres of biofertilizers. Several institutions, including the District Agricultural Office (West Garo Hills), ATMA (West Garo Hills), ICAR-KVK (West Garo Hills), and KVKs from East and South Garo Hills, set up exhibition stalls showcasing their agricultural products.

Dr. Sabyasachi Majumdar and Dr. Niranjan Sivalingam, both faculty members at CCS, CAU (Imphal), coordinated the workshop. The event highlighted the importance of millets in addressing climate change challenges and provided a platform for farmers, students, and agricultural experts to discuss sustainable cultivation practices.
