The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Garo Hills has asked the state government to ensure poor people are benefited from the various schemes including PMGKAY.

“BJP calls upon the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to ensure that the schemes meant for the poor be issued without diversion and delay,” BJP vice president and in-charge of PMGKAY in Meghalaya Bernard N Marak said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The statement was made after a virtual meeting held on Sunday evening with the Centre leaders on implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) where it was informed that every individual should get 5 kilos of rice under PMGKAY till Diwali.

Marak, also Tura MDC, however said that in Meghalaya, free rice was not reaching the poor as directed by the Centre but only ration card holders were availing rice that too on payment.

In order to get a clear picture what was the real issue, BJP leaders filed RTIs which were not replied even after a month, he added.

Marak said that BJP agrees that corona cases are rising in the state and in order to contain the spread of virus, there is a need to impose complete lockdown till the virus is contained else it is mutating very fast.

The notification issued till now mentioned about extension of curfew and direction to follow strict Covid protocols but “lockdown” was not mentioned which created confusion among the masses as the people are not getting the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) as has been directed by the Centre Leaders, he stated.
