Arrests against KSU members backed by strong evidence: Meghalaya police
East Khasi Hills District police chief Rituraj Ravi on Wednesday said the arrest of the two members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) was based on strong evidence.
Speaking to reporters, Ravi said, “During investigation the leads that we received and based on strong evidence, arrests were made.”
“We have been investigating this case as per provisions of law and we have made progress in that as per evidence collected, as per witness accounts and as per all scientific data that we have collected from PO and other relevant matters,” he said.
Shanborlang Shati and Mesadapbor Skhembill, who are members of the KSU South Khasi Hills have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the March 27-Ichamati murder case.
The SP informed that a crowd number around 300-400 had also gathered at Sohra PS protesting against the arrests made by the police in connection with the case. However, the protest was peaceful and after sometime they dispersed from the police station premises.
“They are protesting against the arrests made and we have explained that we are investigating the two murders and law shall take its own course,” he said.
Ravi said, “On that front, we would like to stress that we go as per the evidence that we gathered during the investigation and the investigation is being undertaken as per procedure of law. From the day that this incident happened we were doing our investigations, working on the leads, working on the witnesses.”
The SP said, “We make an endeavor to make arrests during day time however, when we pursue the leads, when we pursue evidence, timing may not always be as per the conveniences, so these things do happen sometimes.”
Ravi informed that the police are maintaining the highest level of security measures throughout the district even as he appealed to the youth not to take law into their own hands and to abide by the rule of law.
