Arrested secretary of Hima Nongspung released on bail
SHILLONG: The secretary of Hima Nongspung Michael Warjri on Wednesday was released on bail from a jail in Assam.
Warjri was received by his family and leaders of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) outside the jail at Lokhra, Guwahati. His bail plea was approved by the Gauhati High Court.
It may be mentioned here that the secretary of Hima Nongspung was arrested by Assam police on May 7. He was charged with extortion.
The arrest also took place hours after he was attacked by a mob who also ransacked his house at Balakhawa village along the inter-state border in Ri Bhoi District.
Members of the FKJGP central and North Khasi Hills District unit also felicitated Warjri on reaching Byrnihat, where he also expressed his gratitude to the FKJGP and HNYF leaders for their help.
However, his daughter Badarilin Rani expressed concern over the state government’s failure to initiate step to secure the release of her father.
FKJGP vice-president Eldie Lyngdoh lauded Warjri for his fight against encroachment by Assam in the border village.
He also demanded the state government to immediately take up the matter with the Assam government for transferring the case of Warjri to Meghalaya police as the incidents occurred within jurisdiction of the state.
