In a major breakthrough, five members of a bike lifter gang were arrested on Tuesday.

A team from the  Special Cell East Khasi Hills had first nabbed 3 bike thieves red-handed,  from 101Area  in the wee hours. They have been identified as Timus Warbah (30), Babar Mawblei (26) and Synraplang Makri (23),  all from  Jirang Ribhoi, district police chief Vivek Syiem said.

An Alto car used by them to move around the city to  scout for bikes parked on the road side,  has been seized. A KTM bike stolen early in the  morning yesterday from Malki  was recovered from their possession, he added.

Two persons  Meaibor Kharryjja (26)  from Sohlap Shella and Bakordor Rapmai (24) of Jatap Shella who help in handing over the  stolen bikes to the buyers in Bangladesh have also been nabbed.

“The gang  has been  involved  in many bike lifting cases in Shillong. They are in  Police custody  now,” the SP said.
