Woman files complaint against Sohra PS for allegedly violating human rights of 19 yrs old son

Mildred Jyrwa, mother of 19-year-old Getwin Jyrwa on Monday filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, and the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) alleging human rights violation and physical abuse of her son by police personnel at the Sohra police station.
According to the complaint, on July 3, 2025, Mildred Jyrwa dropped her son off at the Sohra police station after learning that the police were looking for him. However, when she picked him up in the afternoon, she was shocked to find him seriously injured.
Getwin was subsequently taken to the Sohra Civil Hospital and later referred to the Shillong Civil Hospital for further treatment.
Mildred Jyrwa stated that if her son had committed a crime, the police should have followed due process, which allegedly did not happen in this case.
The fact that Getwin was released on the same day with serious injuries suggests, according to the complaint, that the police personnel involved may have acted punitively, violating her son’s human rights.
“My complaint is based on the basis that if my son has committed a heinous crime that warrant punishment due process of law must have been followed by the police personnel.
A first degree punishment in the police station itself and releasing my son in the same day only shows that the police personnel are being punitive against the human rights of my son to the point of causing serious injuries to his mental and physical being,” the mother stated in her complaint.
“Hence I put forward this FIR cum complaint against the police personnel involved in violating a human being and I request a necessary action from your end,” she stated.
