    West Jaintia Hills District police on Thursday decided to fully implement the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) in the district.

    As per the Act, smoking in public places is prohibited and violators shall be punishable with fine which may extend to Rs 200, the district SP said.

    Section 6(a) prohibits the sale of Cigarettes and other tobacco products to a person the age of eighteen years and in particular area.

    Section 6(b) there should be no sale of tobacco within 100 yards (300 feet) of any educational institutions.

    Hence, violators of the Act will be liable for a fine and punished as per the provision of law.
