Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah announced on Thursday that if the Congress comes to power in 2026, it will replace the existing Orunudoi scheme with a new flagship programme called “Na-Lakhimi.”

Addressing reporters in response to the rollout of Orunudoi 3.0 in Guwahati, Borah stated, “We will close this Orunudoi scheme and introduce a new flagship programme, ‘Na-Lakhimi’. We will provide Rs 3,000 to each woman on the 9th of every month.”

This statement comes as a reaction to the state government’s recent expansion of the Orunudoi scheme, which is a financial assistance program for women.

Borah criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, claiming that the Orunudoi scheme is being selectively provided to individuals enrolled as BJP members.

Borah emphasized that under the Congress’s proposed “Na-Lakhimi” scheme, financial assistance would be extended to all women, regardless of caste, creed, or religious beliefs.

“We will provide for all women, including caste, creed, and religious beliefs,” Borah stated.

He also highlighted the worsening unemployment situation in Assam, pointing out that 32 lakh youths had applied for just 12,600 jobs. Questioning the government’s concern for the remaining unemployed youth, he said, “12,600 will get jobs. What about the rest? Is the Chief Minister concerned over them?”
