Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that his government will not allow uranium mining to take place in Meghalaya.

His statement came after an organization had allegedly write to the Centre for restarting uranium mining project in Meghalaya.

“Any organization can write, I cannot stop organizations from writing to the Government of India but that does not mean it is the stand of the government,” Sangma told reporters.

“We are very clear that without taking people into confidence, without looking at all scientific aspects of things, we are not going to allow the uranium mining to take place in our state,” he said.

The CM said that government’s stand is very clear on the issue as “it is regarding people’s lives, it is regarding people’s health and it is regarding the future of our state”.

“While there may be concerns from individuals, who may want this and certain sections may want to move forward in this, it has to be addressed in a very careful manner as I said we have to take people on board, we have to carefully study the impact of these things and till then we have to ensure that no step is taken in that direction in any way because as I said this is regarding life of the people and the future of our people,” he added.

Further, the CM informed that there has been no communication from the Centre to the State on issue related to uranium mining.
