Wall collapse at PA Sangma Sports Complex: TMC demands comprehensive probe by independent body

Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday demanded an independent probe into the collapse of the retaining wall of PA Sangma Sports Complex and to blacklist the Badri Rai and Company (BRC), who is implementing the project. 

“A comprehensive investigation, conducted by an independent body, is imperative to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable for their actions, including the Minister and the Chief Minister if necessary,” TMC state youth president Richard Marak said in a statement.

“Moreover, it’s crucial to blacklist Badri Rai and Company (BRC) from participating in any future projects to prevent further mishaps,” he said. 

“As the saying goes, ‘actions speak louder than words.’ The citizens of Meghalaya deserve a government that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and the public good. It’s time for concrete actions, not just empty promises, to restore public trust and ensure the integrity of public infrastructure projects,” he added. 

Marak also alleged that the rampant collusion and undeniable connection between Badri Rai and Company (BRC) and the MDA government have plunged our state into a crisis of integrity and accountability, as evidenced by recent events. 

“The collapse of the PA Sangma Stadium retaining wall, occurring twice within a short span, raises serious questions about the quality of construction materials and the efficacy of oversight mechanisms,” he said while adding “Furthermore, the subsequent confiscation of Rs 1 crore from a BRC official’s vehicle following the Chief Minister’s convoy underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability. Despite BRC’s history of recurrent failures, its continued involvement in major projects highlights a systemic failure in governance.” 

Further, the TMC  leader also said that the collapse of the PA Sangma Stadium retaining wall and the subsequent issues surrounding its construction underscore a larger problem of mismanagement and lack of foresight. Built in the heart of the town without adequate parking facilities, the stadium, costing a staggering 172 crore rupees, appears more as a symbol than a practical development initiative.

He said that Meghalaya, on the cusp of celebrating its 50th year and poised to host the National Games in 2021, had ambitious plans for infrastructure development, including numerous stadiums and indoor facilities. However, the reality paints a starkly different picture. Despite the availability of funds, the government’s actions—or lack thereof—have left much to be desired.

This situation not only raises concerns about the quality of construction and oversight but also questions the government’s commitment to genuine progress and development, he said while adding that it’s evident that mere grand gestures without proper planning and execution are not enough to serve the needs of the people.
