VVP boost for Meghalaya: Sitharaman first union minister to reach Sohbar

In a historic first, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Sohbar—a scenic and strategically located border village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills—highlighting the Centre’s commitment to transforming India’s border areas under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP).
Addressing a gathering of local residents, students, and officials, Sitharaman stressed that border villages like Sohbar are not India’s end but its beginning. “It is an honour to be in Sohbar today. The Prime Minister believes border villages are the eyes and ears of our nation. They deserve priority development,” she said.

Marking her as the first Union Minister ever to set foot in Sohbar, Sitharaman announced that the second phase of VVP will now extend its focus to northeastern borders, including Meghalaya. She outlined four key pillars of development for Sohbar: better roads, enhanced telecom and digital connectivity, expanded TV coverage, and reliable electricity supply.
She assured residents that essential services—including banking, education, and primary healthcare within a 5 km radius—would be ensured for all 1,600 villagers. “No family will be left behind,” she affirmed, after reviewing plans with district officials.

Recognising Sohbar’s rich tourism potential, bordered by a river and lush landscapes, Sitharaman applauded Meghalaya’s plans to develop a tourism hub with external assistance, including support from the New Development Bank. “Tourism infrastructure will bring visitors, generate income, and energise the local economy,” she added.
Engaging with the youth, particularly noting the presence of many young women, Sitharaman emphasised digital tools, education, and artisan support. “Your village should offer opportunities, not compel you to migrate. Even Sohbar’s artisans can now reach global markets,” she said.
In her concluding remarks, she reflected on the significance of her visit: “It is unbelievable that I am the first Union Minister to visit this beautiful rain sanctuary. The doors are now open for growth. Stay connected with the government and help us understand your needs better.”
The visit underscores the Centre’s push to turn India’s border villages into self-reliant, vibrant communities through saturation-level implementation of Central schemes.
