Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) MP from Shillong Ricky AJ Syngkon has sought the intervention of the Centre for restoration of the national highway 6 in Meghalaya.

Submitting a memorandum to the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highway Nitin Jairam Gadkari on July 1, Syngkon said, “…I urge your good office to kindly intervene and take immediate and necessary measures on this issue so as to alleviate the pain of the citizens of the states mentioned above.”

He said that National Highway 6 which is a primary national highway that passes through the states of Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura and Mizoram.

NH 6 links some of the very important cities and towns in these 4 states including Jorabat, Shillong, Jowai, Silchar, Aizawl, Agartala and terminates near the India/Myanmar border.

Syngkon said that the section of road that falls under the East Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya is in a deplorable state, especially the stretch from Jowai to Ratacherra where travellers/users have to go through a great ordeal because of the road condition.

“The situation gets even worse during the monsoon seasons and people are often stranded for days to get to their destination. This issue has been ongoing for a few years now and is causing great hardship from economic losses to even loss of precious human life to the citizens of the 4 states of Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram and Tripura,” he stated in the letter.
