President of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Monday said the National People’s Party (NPP) wants to strengthen the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by depriving salaries to its employees for the past several months.

Addressing an election campaign at Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District, Basaiawmoit said that the VPP is demanding implementation of Article 371 to protect Meghalaya from implementation of central laws by the union government, which affects the interest of the indigenous people.

He said no way that the implementation of Article 371 will lead to the dissolution of the district councils in the state of Meghalaya. Therefore, the allegations made by the NPP that the VPP seeks to do away with the district councils is totally false and misleading.

“In fact, we stand for the strengthening of the district councils,” he said.
