The state women’s wing of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has demanded the state government to set up more Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination centres in the state.

In a letter to the education minister Rakkam A Sangma, VPP state women’s wing president Phileta Syiem said many students and their parents have expressed deep concern that, despite selecting Meghalaya as their preferred examination centre, many have been allotted centres outside the state which has caused significant distress among students and families, as the logistical and financial burden of traveling to other states is considerable and, for many, unmanageable.

“While we acknowledge the recent efforts by the NTA to relocate most exam centres for Meghalaya students to Shillong, yet, it is evident that a substantial number of stdents are still being assigned centres outside Meghalaya. This situation not only disrupts their exam preparations but also imposes unnecessary stress and trauma on students who are already under pressure to perform well in a crucial examination,” she stated.

The president also suggested that the government establish a dedicated help desk and online portal where students can register their centre allotments. This will help ascertain the exact number of students affected.

Further, Syiem said it is disappointing that, even three years after CUET’s introduction in 2022, sufficient exam centres have not been established in Meghalaya.

“We urge the government to address this gap by creating more centres within the state, ensuring that students can take national entrance tests without the financial burden of traveling outside the state, and please note that exempting CUET would deny our students the valuable experience of participating in a national-level entrance test and prevent them from applying for the integrated program offered by NEHU and other institutions outside the state. We hope you will treat this matter with utmost urgency and take appropriate steps to guarantee that aspiring students appear for the CUET UG examination in the state,”she added.
