The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday asked the State government to revise the stipend of medical students.

In a letter to the Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, the party general secretary Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon said, “Hence, the party wishes to suggest that it would be prudent on the part of the government to relook and revise the stipend of the students according to the location of their medical institute.”

He said that medical institutions that students from Meghalaya are pursuing are located in towns and cities across the country. The cities in the country are classified into Tier 1, 2 and 3 categories by the government and the cost of living also varies accordingly besides others, he added.

Syngkon also said it was brought to the notice of the party that stipend to the students is not yet disbursed till date causing hardship to them. “Therefore we urge you to kindly look into this matter and take immediate action,” he said in the letter.
