    SHILLONG: In bid to encourage voters to exercise their rights of adult franchise in the ensuing elections to the Autonomous District Council (ADC), the District Council Affairs (DCA) Department has decided to introduce the provision of No of the Above or NOTA in the 2745 EVMs or electronic voting machine as to attract the section of voters who refuse to exercise their right due to lack of choice of candidates.

    Informing this to media persons this evening, DCA Commissioner & Secretary of District Council Affairs Tining Dkhar said that this provision of NOTA is introduce for the first time in the history of the elections of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) which will be going for polling on 27th this month.  He however said that voting machines will not have Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT), which was used by Election Commission.

    Stating the total number of voters in both the ADC is 9, 84, 477 voters Dkhar informed that the numbers of female voters outclass the male voters in both KHADC and JHADC as KHADC has 7, 35, 143 voters, where there are 4.11 lakh females compared to 3.83 lakh males.

    He also said that the constituency with the highest number of voters is Mawlai with 44,296 while Laban-Mawprem with 12, 575 is the constituency with lowest number of voters. The total number of polling stations is 1433 marking an increase by 285, he added.

    The DCA Commissioner & Secretary said that in the case of the JHADC with 2, 49, 334 there are 1.28 lakh females while the numbers of male voters stand at 1.20 lakh who will elect their new representatives in 408 polling stations. He further said that Rymbai Khliehriat constituency registered the maximum number of voters with 14147 and Saipung is with the least number of voters at 5430.
