Vehicles have been seen parking on Sonapur Bridge on National Highway 6, defying the prohibitory orders against parking on the bridge.

Local residents are worried because heavy vehicles continue to park on the bridge, putting it at risk. The bridge is an important connection for Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Manipur. Residents are increasingly concerned about its future as vehicles remain stranded on the bridge for hours.

The District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills District issued a prohibitory order on June 23 in response to vehicles being parked for extended periods on bridges in the Lumshnong-Malidor area during landslides or mudslides. To ensure commuter safety, the district administration in East Jaintia Hills has also erected signboards prohibiting parking on bridges in the Lumshnong-Malidor area of National Highway 6.
