The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has achieved a significant milestone, with its Department of Physics securing the 34th rank in the prestigious Nature Index 2024, surpassing several top institutions in India. Additionally, USTM has been ranked 48th overall in research output, as per the database curated by Springer Nature.

Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, called the recognition a testament to the university’s dedication to cutting-edge research, innovation, and academic excellence. “By consistently pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery, USTM is emerging as a leading research hub in the country,” he said.

Dr. Nitu Borgohain, Head of the Department of Physics at USTM, attributed this achievement to the outstanding contributions of Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed, Assistant Professor in the department. “His dedication and expertise in theoretical physics have propelled USTM to an enviable position on the global research stage,” she said.

Dr. Ahmed’s seven research papers, published in the European Physical Journal C—an esteemed Nature Indexed journal—have collectively earned a cumulative impact score of 4.67. Expressing his joy, Dr Ahmed stated, “I am honoured that my work has contributed to USTM’s rise in the Nature Index rankings. Our department’s ranking at 34 and the university’s overall position at 48 underscore our commitment to high-quality research.”

The Nature Index is a globally recognized database that tracks high-quality research output in the natural sciences. Maintained by Nature Research, it evaluates institutional and country-level performance based on publications in 82 top-tier scientific journals across disciplines such as physics, chemistry, earth sciences, and life sciences.
