USTM pays tribute to P.A. Sangma on 78th birth anniversary with 9th memorial lecture

The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Sunday marked the 78th birth anniversary of late Purno Agitok Sangma, one of the most influential leaders from the Northeast, with the 9th P.A. Sangma Memorial Lecture.
Themed “The Legacy of P.A. Sangma, the Role of the Present Government, and Meghalaya 2040,” the programme brought together dignitaries, academicians, and students to reflect on Sangma’s contributions to Indian politics and his vision for education and development.
The event began with musical performances in Khasi and Garo, paying tribute to Sangma’s cultural roots. Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, recalled Sangma’s advice in 2008 that the university should aim to be of “the best quality—not just for the Northeast and the nation, but at the international level.” He said USTM continues to live up to that vision, having secured NAAC ‘A’ accreditation for three consecutive years and a place among India’s top 200 universities.
Delivering the memorial lecture, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA of Umsning Constituency and Chief Guest, described Sangma as a leader whose greatness lay in his total commitment. “No one, including himself, knew he would be great, but he became great because he gave his 100%,” he said, urging students to follow the same path.

Guest of Honour Violet Baruah, IPS (Retd.), former Inspector General of Police, highlighted Sangma’s compassionate leadership. “Artificial Intelligence may dominate the future, but it can never replace the heart-to-heart connection he embodied,” she remarked.
The celebration also featured prize distributions for essay and sketch competitions held in Sangma’s memory. Padma Shri Dr. Sarbeswar Saharia, Pro Vice Chancellor of USTM, delivered the vote of thanks.
Remembered as a visionary statesman and trailblazer from the Northeast, P.A. Sangma’s legacy continues through USTM and the P.A. Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, both inspired by his ideals of excellence and inclusivity.
