The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has launched its first batch of nursing students under the Regional Institute of Nursing Education (RINE) with a four-day induction programme that began on August 19.

The inaugural day was graced by Dr. Unmona Bargohain, Principal of AIIMS, and Ivory Kharduit, Deputy Director of Nursing, Meghalaya, who attended as chief guests. Padma Shri awardee Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariya, Pro Vice-Chancellor of USTM, also addressed the gathering, urging students to uphold service, compassion, and humanity as the guiding principles of nursing.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Dr. Abhinandan Das, Principal of PIMC, spoke on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare and encouraged students to embrace innovation and lifelong learning.

The orientation programme also featured inputs from leading medical educators and scholars, including Dr. Kalpana Hazarika, Principal of RINE; Dr. Pooja Chaudhuri; Dr. Mitali Goswami; Dr. Geeta Das; and Dr. Shyam Sundar Sarma. Their talks provided students with insights into the values of dedication, professionalism, and ethics in nursing practice.

A series of sessions throughout the day combined expert lectures with interactive discussions, practical training in hospital settings, skill laboratories, and first-aid demonstrations. Students also visited the university’s Herbal Garden to learn about the role of traditional and alternative therapies in modern nursing.

Highlighting career opportunities, Dr. Baby Dutta underscored the importance of professional ethics, continuous learning, and patient-centred care.

The first day concluded with a cultural programme, which encouraged teamwork, creativity, and camaraderie among the new batch of nursing students.

With three more days of field exposure, skill-building activities, and academic interactions ahead, the orientation programme aims to provide the students with a strong foundation as they embark on their professional journey in nursing.
