The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) welcomed its new batch of PhD scholars (2025A) with a comprehensive orientation programme, marking the beginning of their research journey.

The event commenced with an inspiring address by Vice Chancellor Prof. G.D. Sharma, who outlined the essential pillars of doctoral research, including coursework, publications, and the vast opportunities for research in Northeast India.

The first keynote session was delivered by Dr. S.R. Joshi, Professor at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, who provided an in-depth understanding of research fundamentals. He emphasized research ethics, integrity, and the critical need to avoid plagiarism while striving for high-quality contributions.

In the second session, Prof. Kipgen guided scholars on selecting impactful research topics and publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals indexed in Web of Science and Scopus. He cautioned against predatory journals and underscored the importance of increasing research citations and fostering collaboration. He also encouraged participation in national and international conferences to stay informed about global research trends.

Prof. R.K. Sharma, Advisor, USTM, reinforced these insights, urging scholars to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence and ensure their research has a meaningful impact.

The orientation also featured a session by Dr. Nurujaman Laskar, Controller of Examination and Admissions, who provided a detailed overview of UGC guidelines and PhD regulations at USTM. He stressed the importance of maintaining attendance, adhering to institutional protocols, and ensuring timely research completion.

Additionally, distinguished faculty members, including Dr. Enamul Karim (Dean, School of Applied Sciences), Prof. Gayatree Goswami (School of Education), Prof. Amit Choudhury (School of Technology and Management), Dr. Mitali Goswami (HoD, Department of English), and Dr. Amirul Hussain Barbhuiyan (School of Allied Sciences), shared their insights on the challenges and rewards of a PhD journey.
