    The District Magistrate, West Jaintia Hills has promulgated an order under Section 144 Cr. PC prohibiting use of plastic carry bags with thickness less than 50 microns.

    The order states that no persons, shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers, traders, hawkers or salesmen shall use plastic carry bags with less than 50 microns and also use of plastic sheets or like, which is not an integral part of multi-layered packing and cover made of plastic sheet used for packaging, wrapping with thickness less than 50 microns.

    However, Plastic bags, multilayered films (excluding carry bags) which constitutes or form an integral part of packing in which goods are sealed prior to use at manufacturing, processing units, plastics bags and sheets used in Forestry and Horticulture nurseries, plastic bags or plastic used for packing medicines are exempted from the purview of this order.

    The order has been issued in observation that the plastic waste are causing blockage to gutters, sewers and drains apart from resulting in pollution of water bodies both in urban and rural areas.
