Union seek Guv’s intervention into NEHU failure to regularise services of casual workers

The All North Eastern Hill University Workers’ Union on Monday sought the intervention of the Governor Satya Pal Malik, who is also the Chief Rector of the university, into the failure of the NEHU authority to regularise the services of the casual workers despite working for the past 10 years.  

After the meeting with Malik, President of the Union Napoleon S Mawphniang told reporters that there are over 505 casual employees in the Shillong and Tura campuses of NEHU.

“Majority have been working for the last ten years and they are yet to be regularised by the NEHU administration,” he said.  

According to him, the casual workers have been paid meager wages for the past many years besides women especially are also denied maternity leave.

Moreover, Mawphniang said the NEHU administration does not have any interest in listening to the grievances of the casual workers. The casual employees are also being threatened to be terminated and deduction of wages as a consequence for participating in the recent sit-in-protests organized by the union.

Mawphniang further alleged that the administration had regularized the services of few casual employees, who were appointed a few years ago. “However, the same administration failed to regularise the services of employees, who are working for over a decade in the university,” he said.

When asked, the president informed that the Governor has assured the delegation that he would take up the issues of the casual workers with the NEHU vice chancellor before taking a final decision on the matter.
