The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Monday announced its second list of nine candidates for the upcoming elections to the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, slated to be held on February 21, next year.

Of this, 6 candidates from constituencies under the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and 3 from constituencies under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The candidates for JHADC include Medling M Swer – War East, Kat Kassar – War Central, Shlur Lamin – War West, Damian S War – Mynsngat Khanduli, Rimilanki Synnah – Nartiang-Wahiajer, Wailad Siangshai – Musniang Rangad.

For KHADC, the candidates are Suly Lyngdoh – Mawsynram, Gilbert Laloo – Mylliem and Ryngkatlang Lyndem – Langkyrdem Laitkroh.

So far, 35 candidates have been declared by the party of which 19 for KHADC and 16 for JHADC.

Addressing during a meeting held at the party office, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh said, “We are confident that the party will win the upcoming ADC elections.”

Stating that the process of selecting candidates is based on transparency, he said, “The power does not rest with the state election committee or the district or circle but the power is with the people, who will approve and extend their full support to our candidates.”

According to him, that is why the process of selecting candidates started right from the village level before it comes to the constituency, district and state level.

Lyngdoh further claimed that there is no fighting over party ticket within the UDP.

“There may be two-three people, who are vying for the party ticket but in the end, we have to select only one candidate from each constituency. But in the UDP there is no such thing as fighting over party ticket. However nonetheless, I urged our party workers, whose names have not been approved for selection as candidates, to continue to work together to ensure victory of the candidates,” he said.

Further, UDP chief said that the ADC elections is totally different from the MLA and MP elections.

“We are confident that all candidates declared by the party have a good chance to win the upcoming elections. Selection have been done after due diligence and based on winnability. So I urged all candidates to workhard to ensure the party’s victory. This is a very different election, it is different from MLA and MP elections. Therefore, party workers should work very hard to ensure victory to the party,” he added.
