SHILLONG: Two live mortar shells were found in East Khasi Hills District last month and were later detonated by the bomb squads of the state police.

District police chief Claudia A Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday that the two mortal shells were recovered simultaneously at Nongmensong area in Shillong and Sohryngkham village, about 20 km from here.

The live mortar shell was spotted by people in Nongmensong who immediately informed the police while the one in Sohryngkham was handed over by a person after he recovered the same while digging his field, she said.

Asked, the SP said we presume that these were the old World War-II mortar shells. She said the live mortal shells were detonated by the police bomb squad at Mawiong after permission was granted by the Court.

She also said that the blast was so powerful that it actually shook the entire battalion adding “Thank God, these people were not fiddling around (with the mortar shells) or sell them as scraps.”
