  • Two more COVID-19 deaths, 24 new infections in Meghalaya

    The death toll due to COVID-19 went up to 143 after two more persons have succumbed to the viral infection on Friday.

    Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said two more COVID related deaths were reported from East Khasi Hills district.

    He said 55-year-old Rina Dutta, a resident of Saha Colony Dhalai, Tripura passed away at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on January 6.

    “The immediate cause of death was due to severe aortic stenosis with severe pulmonary hypertension, cardio respiratory arrest, cardioembolic stroke with seizure with COVID pneumonia,” he said.

    Dr War said another patient, Namita Deka (31) from Police Reserve, Shillong also died in the same hospital on January 6. “She was a known case of advanced stage carcinoma rectum under palliative care. In casualty, the patient developed cardiac arrest and was declared dead at 8.59 pm. RTPCR was done and found to be COVID positive. The immediate cause of death was due malignant cachexia,” he informed.

    Meanwhile, the state has recorded 24 new COVID-19 cases and 5 recoveries on Friday.

    Dr War said the new cases included 21 in East Khasi Hills district, 1 East Jaintia Hills district, 1 North Garo Hills district and 1 South Garo Hills district.

    He informed that five patients who recovered from the viral infection include 4 from East Khasi Hills and 1 from West Garo Hills.

    So far, the state has detected a total of 13,560 COVID-19 cases out of which 155 are active cases, 13,262 recovered and 143 deaths.

    East Khasi Hills has 125 active cases, Ri Bhoi 3, West Jaintia Hills 10, West Garo Hills 7, West Khasi Hills 3, East Jaintia Hills 3 and North Garo Hills 3.

    On the other hand, of the 3,05,124 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 2,91,564 were tested negative for the virus even as 47 persons are in institutional quarantine and 98 under home quarantine.

    There are 80,816 entrants from outside the state.
