Two persons were arrested for their involvement in a mob attack at the police operations group centre (OGC) at Tapadarengchi in North Garo Hills district on Saturday night.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai said on Saturday evening, the In-Charge of Tapadarengchi OGC received information that some villagers had apprehended one person suspecting him to be dacoit/kidnapper and that the mob was assaulting him at Tapa Bazaar.

He said immediately the officials rushed to the area, and rescued the person who was assaulted and took him to Resubelpara CHC for immediate medical attention.

Concomitantly, rumour about the incident started to spread further resulting in several hundreds of people from neighbouring villages appeared at Tapadarengchi OGC at around  9:30 PM.

“The crowd demanded that the suspected person be shown and handed over to them and the agitated mob started breaking the fence and destroying the properties of Tapadarengchi OGC compound,” Iangrai said.

He also informed that to prevent further damage to the government properties and to disperse the unruly mob the police team had to resort to blank fire, forcing the mob to disperse.

Stating that there was no injury reported to both the police and the public during the incident at Tapadarengchi  OGC, the AIGP said additional force and SF-10 commandos have been immediately deployed in the area and situation is under close observation.

He said in this connection 2 persons have been arrested and 2 cases have been registered under relevant section of law.

Meanwhile, the state police appeals to the public not to fall prey to misinformation and they are requested to refrain from taking law into their own hands.
