To inspire and encourage students to pursue higher academic goals, Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai, held its Graduation Day on Friday, honouring 240 graduates from the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), and Higher Secondary (HSSLC) courses.

The ceremony was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as chief guest, alongside Rev. S.R. Dkhar, Moderator of the KJP Synod Mihngi, as guest of honour.

Addressing the graduates, Dhar said the day marked a new beginning filled with fresh challenges, goals, and opportunities. He urged the students to choose career paths they are passionate about while stressing that true success must be earned and cannot be bought.

He reminded the youth not to be discouraged by failures, noting that many are not even given the chance to try. Encouraging them to look beyond government jobs, Dhar highlighted that Meghalaya ranks third in terms of population percentage of young people, with 49% below the age of 19, making it impossible for the government alone to provide employment for all.

However, he pointed out that the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has launched several initiatives—such as CM Elevates, Prime Hub, Yess Meghalaya, Ginger Mission, and Lakadong Mission—to boost entrepreneurship, skill development, and employment opportunities.

“Education does not guarantee a government job, but with the right knowledge and determination, opportunities will always open up,” Dhar added, calling on students to work hard and remain resilient.

Earlier, the Principal, Dr. A. Nongbri, delivered the welcome address, followed by prayers from Kong R.B. Dkhar, Assistant Professor, Department of Khasi, and a speech by Lionel War, President of the Alumni Association.

Alongside the graduates, nine students who excelled as department toppers were specially felicitated. Among them was R. Gracedalyne Rose Tang, who secured the 9th position in the NEHU Examination 2025 and topped the English Department. Others included Memorial Lyngdoh (Khasi), Effie Vanroy Ryngkhlem (Political Science), Yookini Phawa (Education), Darihun Tyngkra (Philosophy), and Visakadaroy Lakiang (Commerce).

In the HSSLC category, honours went to Steffie Banrilily Dkhar (Arts), Leiki Daeimiki Wann (Science), and Lamdame Pariat (Commerce).

The day’s celebrations were enriched with cultural performances by students in the presence of Vice Principal Wandy E.H Lamin, governing body members, faculty, parents, and invited guests.
