Tezpur University launches hands-on Math workshop to inspire school students

In a bid to make mathematics exciting and accessible to young learners, the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Tezpur University has kicked off a week-long workshop titled ‘7-Day Excursion in Mathematics 2025’, in collaboration with the Assam Academy of Mathematics.
The programme, which began Thursday on the university campus, has drawn around 60 students from classes 5 to 10 across the Tezpur region. Over the next seven days, participants will explore the world of mathematics through hands-on activities, interactive sessions, and expert guidance—aimed at reshaping how students perceive the subject.
At the inaugural session, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, addressed the students as the chief guest. He emphasized that mathematics is far more than formulas and equations—it is a discipline that sharpens logic and influences diverse fields like weather forecasting, artificial intelligence, and sports analytics.
Dr. Bhim Prasad Sarmah, faculty coordinator of the programme, highlighted the outreach legacy of the Assam Academy of Mathematics, which has been promoting math awareness since 1986. He praised the university’s sustained efforts to connect with school students and foster curiosity at an early stage.

Dr. Biren Das, Controller of Examinations, TU, encouraged students to move beyond the conventional image of mathematics and embrace its real-world relevance.
Prof. Shuvam Sen, Head of the Department of Mathematics, shared that the workshop will offer students “fresh perspectives, creative thinking tools, and a chance to interact directly with math professionals.”
Also present at the event was Dr. Ram Charan Deka, former Vice Principal of Darrang College and former President of the Assam Academy of Mathematics (Sonitpur branch), underscoring the local academic community’s commitment to nurturing mathematical talent.
The initiative reflects Tezpur University’s broader goal of making STEM education engaging, practical, and future-ready for young minds across Assam.
