Synjuk seeks Paul Lyngdoh’s support to boost tourism in Chutwakhu, Iooksi and Saphai

The Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Iooksi-Saphai Circle has submitted a memorandum to Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, highlighting the untapped tourism potential of 13 villages in the Chutwakhu–Saphai corridor and seeking urgent intervention for its development.
The memorandum, handed over during an interaction at the Kupli Orchid Resort, underscored the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and peaceful environment. It noted that despite these strengths, the area has not seen the level of tourism growth it deserves.

“We strongly believe that with the right strategies and investment, this area can emerge as a vibrant tourism hub, benefitting not only the local communities but also contributing to the overall economy of the state,” said Nangaibormi Sutnga, General Secretary of the Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Iooksi-Saphai Circle.
In their appeal, the Synjuk requested that the 13 villages from Chutwakhu to Saphai be officially declared as a tourism zone by the Department of Tourism. They also urged the government to map and include these villages under the department’s jurisdiction so that residents could access government schemes, financial support, and training programs.

The memorandum further called for a dedicated initiative to clean and restore the Kupli River, highlighting the importance of reviving native fish species to reinstate traditional fishing practices while also boosting eco-tourism and environmental conservation. Additionally, they proposed the development of eco-friendly water sport activities such as kayaking, rafting, paddle boating, and angling along the Kupli River to attract adventure tourists while preserving the river’s ecological balance.
During the meeting, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh assured the delegation of his commitment to look into the proposals and take necessary steps to promote tourism in the region with a focus on sustainability and community involvement.
The Synjuk expressed optimism that government support would unlock the vast tourism potential of Chutwakhu–Saphai, create meaningful employment opportunities, and showcase the area’s unique landscapes and cultural heritage to visitors from across the world.
