    Phurly Suting, 52 years old resident of Umtasor, Birksuid, Ri Bhoi District, who was arrested in connection with a murder case registerd under Nongpoh PS Case No. 50(5)2024 U/S 451/302 IPC on 24.05.2024 has died in police custody.

    Suting granted police custody for three days by Ri Bhoi District Court. Unfortunately, he was declared brought dead at MIMHANS hospital, Shillong.

    It may be mentioned that on the evening of May 23, around 7 o’clock, one person identified as Amison Muruh of Umtasor Mawdkhar was killed with a sharp weapon in his residence. Police arrested Suting later that night as a suspect.

    Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa stated that during police custody, the accused became very aggressive and started showing signs of mental disorder/breakdown on May 25. Subsequently, he was sent for a medical examination at Civil Hospital Nongpoh that afternoon, from where he was referred to MIMHANS, Shillong. Unfortunately, he was declared brought dead on arrival at MIMHANS Shillong.

    He also informed, the body of the accused was later shifted to the Morgue Room at Civil Hospital, Shillong. An inquest was conducted under videography by a Magistrate from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, in the presence of the Medical Officer of Civil Hospital Shillong, and a post-mortem was also conducted. All guidelines prescribed by the National Human Rights Commission were diligently followed.

    A case of unatural death has been registered vide Umiam PS UD Case No. 14/2024 dated 26.05.2024 and is being investigated.
