    The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Athletics Association, officially inaugurated the State Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2025 today at SAI STC, NEHU Shillong Campus. The three-day event, from May 20 to 22, offers a platform for young athletes from across the state to showcase their talent and determination.

    Dignitaries present included Richard Yanthan, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, who attended as Chief Guest; John F Kharshiing, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), as Guest of Honour; D D Shira, Director, Sports & Youth Affairs; Finely Pariat, General Secretary, MSOA; along with senior officials from the sports department, police, representatives from the Meghalaya Athletics Association, school authorities, and students.

    The meet began with a ceremonial unfurling to mark the official opening of the event.

    In his address, Richard Yanthan highlighted the role of sports in shaping the lives of youth. He emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming Meghalaya into a hub for sporting excellence through infrastructure development and athlete-focused initiatives. He noted that the event itself reflects the state’s dedication to nurturing sports as a tool for youth development and well-being.

    In his keynote address, D D Shira shared that the state-level meet is the culmination of district-level competitions and features 780 athletes competing in 48 events across various age categories. He also mentioned that 36 officials and about 200 volunteers are managing different aspects of the meet.

    John F Kharshiing noted the significance of the event in light of Meghalaya’s preparations to host the 39th National Games in 2027. He described the meet as a stepping stone towards fostering a sporting culture that is inclusive and competitive.
