Standing tall: KHADC Chief Rynjah rekindles Khasi pride at Kherwang Festival

KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah turned heads on Friday with a strong cultural statement, becoming the lone Khasi representative to attend the Thoh Lyngdoh festival—a sacred pre-sowing ritual of the Khasi Kherwang tribe—held at Mynser in West Karbi Anglong.
His presence carried deep meaning for the local community. Welcomed warmly, Rynjah’s attendance was seen as a bridge between Khasi communities across borders and a gesture of solidarity. “I love my own blood as I love myself,” he said, capturing his emotional connection to his roots and his people.
Rynjah’s commitment did not go unnoticed. Pynshngainlang Rattane, President of the United Khasi Peoples’ Organisation (UKPO) and adviser of Seng Raid Kherwang, praised his dedication to Khasi unity and cultural preservation.
The event was also attended by prominent regional figures including KAAC Executive Member D. Uphing Maslai, Deputy Speaker Avijit Kro, researcher Bhogtoram Mawroh, and Avner Pariat. Their presence added weight to the ritual, enhancing its cultural significance.
More than just a ceremonial observance, the Thoh Lyngdoh ritual remains a spiritual cornerstone for the Khasi Kherwang tribe. Rynjah’s active participation helped spotlight its relevance in today’s world and sent a clear message: cultural identity is worth showing up for.
