The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department has been able to contain the African swine fever from spreading across the state.

“There has been no increase in the (cases) of African swine fever,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of the department, Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Tuesday.

He said so far, the spread of the disease is being contained only in the 19 villages, which have been declared as ‘epicentres’.

The 19 villages include 4 in West Jaintia Hills district, 5 in Ri Bhoi district, 7 in East Khasi Hills district, 2 in East Jaintia Hills district and 1 in West Khasi Hills district.

Asked, the deputy chief minister informed the state is yet to have a single case of cattle being infected with the lumpy skin disease.

“However, since we cannot be complacent, I have instructed the Director of the Veterinary to be more vigilant and pro-active on this by going down to the grassroot as awareness has to be given to all farmers,” he said.
