The voice that once sang of humanity, justice, and unity echoed once more at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) as students, faculty, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Themed “Voice of Bhupen Hazarika: Voice of the People; Leading to a Harmonious Society”, the event at USTM’s Central Auditorium was not just a commemoration—it was a living dialogue with the legacy of the “Sudha Kontho of Assam.” From music and dance to stories and reflections, the day resonated with the timeless power of the maestro who reminded the world: “We all share the same sky, there is no monopoly.”

The celebration began with a moving visual presentation that traced Hazarika’s journey as a singer, composer, filmmaker, writer, and cultural icon. A floral tribute set the tone of reverence before the stage came alive with vibrant group performances. Students and faculty poured their hearts into dance and song, echoing the maestro’s dream of a just and inclusive society.

In a keynote that captivated the audience, Prag News Editor-in-Chief Prasanta Rajguru took listeners through five of Hazarika’s most iconic songs, weaving them into the story of Assam’s struggles, resilience, and aspirations. “Each song was not just music,” Rajguru said, “but a voice of protest, hope, and universal brotherhood.”

Adding a theatrical touch, actor Kamal Singh stepped onto the stage as a striking lookalike of Bhupen Hazarika, complete with the maestro’s trademark cap. His tribute performance drew thunderous applause, bringing the legend’s spirit palpably close for the audience.

The event also featured reflections from Dr. Abhinandan Das, Principal of PIMC, who highlighted the global and enduring significance of Hazarika’s contributions, and from eminent writer and musician Dr. Aparna Buzarbaruah, who spoke of the maestro’s unique ability to bridge art, science, and humanism.

The celebration was not only about remembrance but also recognition. On September 6, USTM hosted a cultural competition in Hazarika’s honour, and three students who stood out for their performances were felicitated during the centenary program. Their smiles during the group photograph with dignitaries added a fresh note of continuity to the maestro’s legacy—reminding everyone that his songs live on in the voices of today’s youth.

The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Prof. Gayatree Goswamee, Dean of the Qomrul Hoque School of Education. She described the celebration as “a collective act of gratitude to a man who gave music to humanity’s heartbeat.”

As the curtains fell, one truth lingered: Bhupen Hazarika was not only the voice of Assam but also the voice of every person who has ever dreamed of a fairer, more compassionate world. At USTM, his centenary was celebrated not just in memory, but in practice—through music, performance, and a shared commitment to harmony.
