Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla has emphasized the need for a collective effort to tackle the drug menace in Meghalaya.

According to him, the issue of drug abuse is a concern not only in the state but also across the country and the world.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shylla stressed that it is essential for individuals, families, and communities to come together to support those affected by drug abuse.

He appreciated the efforts of Dorbar Shnong in different localities, which have been working to prevent drug abuse among youths.

Shylla highlighted the role of MLAs in introducing sports activities and other initiatives to engage youths and prevent them from getting involved in drugs. He also acknowledged the efforts of government departments, including the police and health departments, in tackling the drug menace.

Emphasizing the importance of open discussion and support for individuals and families affected by drug abuse, the minister urged people not to hide or be ashamed of family members who are struggling with addiction, but instead, to offer support and help them overcome their struggles.

“…if someone is using drugs in my family, I have to share it, if I hide then that will grow within the family and then later on it will be next impossible for him to overcome the drugs.

So we have to support and then we have to be with them and at the same time we should not be ashame of our family members if they are using drugs and all, so that is my request,” he stated.

When asked, Shylla noted that while checkpoints are important in preventing the entry of drugs, they are not the only solution. He cited the example of countries like the USA, which despite having robust tracking systems, still struggle with drug abuse.

Shylla reiterated that a collective effort from all stakeholders is necessary to effectively tackle the drug menace.

Further, Shylla has emphasized the importance of installing CCTV cameras for the safety of tourists and citizens in Meghalaya. Shylla noted that while it is crucial to have CCTV cameras, the challenge lies in managing and implementing the system effectively.

Shylla appreciated the fact that many big shops and establishments already have CCTV cameras installed. He also highlighted the role of mobile phones in solving cases through recordings.

Shylla suggested that an Integrated Command Control System would be beneficial, especially in areas like Jaintia Hills.

Shylla emphasized that installing CCTV cameras is not just the responsibility of the government, but also of individuals and businesses. He noted that many people have installed CCTV cameras in their homes and shops for security purposes, and that a collective effort would be necessary to ensure the safety of citizens and tourists.
