Shillong Premier League: Mawlai beat Langsning as new goalkeeper rule enforced for first time

Mawlai continued their stronghold over Langsning in the Shillong Premier League 2025 with a 1-0 victory at the SSA Stadium, Polo Ground, on Friday, courtesy of a 52nd-minute header by Banraplang Pyngrope.
The win not only lifted Mawlai to second place with 6 points, three adrift of leaders Nangkiew Irat, but also marked their sixth victory in seven SPL encounters against Langsning, the other being a draw. For Langsning, this was their first defeat of the season, dropping them to fourth on 4 points.
While Pyngrope’s decisive strike separated the sides, the clash will be remembered for another reason—the first time the SPL’s new rule penalising goalkeepers for holding the ball beyond eight seconds was enforced. Mawlai’s custodian Banshanskhem Kharsyntiew fell foul of the regulation, leading referee Lightstar Kharduit to award Langsning a rare indirect corner.
The match itself was a thrilling contest, with both teams carving out chances. Mawlai struck the upright through Brolington Warlarpih in the first half, while Langsning’s Atlanson Kharmaw wasted a golden opportunity from a free-kick on the edge of the box. After the break, Mawlai’s relentless pressure finally told when Robertson Khongriah’s corner was met at the near post by Pyngrope’s sharp header.
Langsning pressed hard for an equaliser, relying on Chusrang Sangma’s long throws and late attacking surges, but Mawlai stood firm to secure a statement victory and put themselves firmly back in the SPL 2025 title race.
The league continues on Monday with Rangdajied United and Nongrim Hills battling to escape the relegation zone. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30pm.
