Shillong gets first modern mall as Sitharaman opens Polo Commercial Complex

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday inaugurated Shillong’s first modern mall—the Polo Shopping Complex—developed at a cost of Rs 100 crore under the Smart City Mission. The launch was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister incharge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Warmly welcoming Sitharaman, Conrad K Sangma, said, “I take this opportunity to welcome the Union Finance Minister to Shillong and to our state of Meghalaya. We have eagerly awaited this program for a very long time. I have been working with our Finance Minister for many years, and she has always been kind and considerate towards Meghalaya and the entire Northeast.”

The Chief Minister highlighted the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, which has been instrumental in developing infrastructure in Meghalaya.
He credited the finance minister for her role in securing maximum funds for the state through this scheme.

Sangma discussed various transformative projects that are being undertaken in Shillong, including the development of the riverfront, a sports complex, and additional infrastructure.
He emphasized that these projects symbolize the progress and transformation of the city.
The Chief Minister outlined the state’s plans for future development, including the creation of a new administrative city, the beautification of public spaces, and the implementation of underground duct cabling.
He expressed optimism about the potential of these projects to enhance the quality of life for the people of Shillong and drive economic growth.

The Polo Commercial Complex stands as a significant milestone in Shillong’s urban transformation journey, developed under the Smart Cities Mission.
As the first modern shopping mall in the city, the complex not only elevates the commercial infrastructure of Shillong but also enhances the quality of life for its residents through modern facilities and sustainable design.
Developed at a project cost of Rs 100.33 crore, the complex spans 1.26 acres with a total built-up area of approximately 1.70 lakh square feet.

In line with eco-conscious development goals, the Polo Commercial Complex integrates Rainwater Harvesting system and Rooftop Solar installations.
