National People’s Party (NPP) spokesperson Himalaya M Shangpliang on Thursday said voting for the opposition Congress would be like “sailing on a sinking ship”.

Shangplaing was hitting back at the Congress chief and sitting MP Vincent H Pala for alleging that the people will only be digging their own grave if they vote for NPP because it is a shadow of the BJP.

“Who would like to sail on a sinking ship? Instead of people voting for the Congress, it is better for them to vote for the NPP, which will ensure the flow of more developments to the state of Meghalaya,” Shangpliang said.

He also reminded that the NPP has been a partner of the BJP-led NDA at the Centre right from the time of late Purno Agitok Sangma and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

“It is not a recent alliance and this alliance had been there since the time when (L) PA Sangma had fought for the election to the post of the President of India,” he said.

Further, the NPP spokesperson said that Congress has no future at the State and Centre.

“It would be meaningless for people to vote again for the Congress as their place would be to sit again in the opposition. That is why people should vote for Ampareen Lyngdoh so that she can bring lots of development for the Khasi and Jaintia region and the people,” he said.

Moreover, Shangpliang alleged that more and more people are deserting the Congress on a daily basis.

“Many are joining the NPP before the Congress’ ship sinks and we are expecting more Congress workers to join the NPP in the days to come,” he said.

According to him, two sitting Congress MDCs along with hundreds of workers all over the state have quit the party and joined the NPP.
