MLAs from South Garo Hills district have decided to request the chief minister Conrad K Sangma to take up with the Centre for extension of the railway line to Baghmara.

Informing this on Monday, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said, “I along with four MLAs from the district will be meeting chief minister to submit a memorandum for extension the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar to Baghmara and even to Dhaka.”

“This will be the corridor for trade in the long run as in the pre-independence time specially South Garo Hills, we had a good trade and business before,” he added.

He mentioned that America is rich because they have good roads and said, “Therefore, connectivity is important for the economic development of the region.”

“We will request the CM to take up with the Centre for extension of the railways to Baghmara and to Dhaka,” Sangma said.

He however emphasized the importance of setting up of integrated check points for keeping a check on illegal immigration.
