Several shops destroyed in Jowai fire incident

Several shops were destroyed when a major fire broke at Iaw Thymme (new market) at Jowai in West Jaintia Hills on Sunday evening.

The incident took place at around 7 pm, police said.

Preliminary enquiry indicates that 15 temporary shed of market and dryfish store made of CGI sheets along with stock of dryfsh was burnt, they said. 

However, no casualty was reported. 

Police said that the cause of fire is suspected to have spread from a tea stall located near the dryfish store. Further assessment and enquiry is still on, they said. 

Meanwhile, the fire has been completely douse by fire services in Jowai.
