The District Magistrate East Khasi Hills District has prohibited the throwing of garbage/ trash and effluent discharge directly into Umiam Lake or which may lead to the lake from all its adjacent areas falling under East Khasi Hills District.

The prohibitory order was imposed as per provision of Section 144 CrPC issued on Friday last.

It was issued in pursuance to order Dated 03.10.2023 of High Court of Meghalaya in PIL.No.10/2019 in Re-Cleanliness of Umiam Lake Vs. State of Meghalaya. The Court directed the Government to make sure that all water bodies are kept clean and people are made aware of the importance of keeping the water bodies clean, with particular reference to Umiam Lake

The prohibitory order informed that it has been noticed that there is indiscriminate throwing of garbage directly into the lake by travelers/revelers/shops and establishments, etc.

There are also instances of trash flowing into the Umiam Lake from the areas adjacent to it falling under East Khasi Hills District.

Due to the indiscriminate throwing of garbage from Shillong, Wahumkhrah flowing to Umiam lake….first of all you have to stop throwing of garbage from Polo areas and the entire villages aside the River Bank of Wahumkhrah
