An adhoc school in a remote village of West Jaintia Hills District on Friday remained open despite heavy rainfall violating the order of the state government, which directed closure of all schools in the state till June 20.

Students of the Kyndongtuber Secondary School at Kyndongtuber village were made to cross flood water to reach the school, sources from the village said.

“This is total disregard of the government’s order by the concerned school management,” a resident of the village on request of anonymity said while urging the state government to immediately take action against the school for putting the lives of the students at risk.

On Thursday, the state government on Thursday directed that all schools remain closed from June 17 to June 20.

A notification issued by Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Education Dr BDR Tiwari had said this was in view of the inclement weather and warning by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) MET Centre Shillong on heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rainfall which is very likely to continue over Meghalaya during next 5 days.

The respective deputy commissioners are advised to assess and examine on a case-to-case basis, on the safety for reopening of schools in their respective districts.

“This notification is issued in the interest of the safety of school children and shall come into force with immediate effect till further order,” the notification had said.
