In a historic achievement that has put Meghalaya on the international bodybuilding map, Sawakani Lakiang from Tpep Pale, Jowai, has become the first woman from the state to win a gold medal at the SAARC Bodybuilding Championship and earn a coveted Pro Card.
Lakiang clinched the top position in the Women’s Bikini Model category at the prestigious event organised by the World Fitness Federation under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), held in Mumbai on May 19, 2025. Her victory marks a significant milestone not just for the district but for the entire state, inspiring a new generation of female athletes.
To honour her extraordinary accomplishment, the District Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) and the Jowai Women Police Station, organised a felicitation ceremony at the DSWO office in Mookyrdup, Jowai. Lakiang was accompanied by her coach, Dr. Desire Kynjing, and her family.
Currently serving as the Ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative for West Jaintia Hills, Lakiang has been an active voice for women’s empowerment. Officials praised her not only for her athletic excellence but also for being a role model who embodies discipline, dedication, and courage.

The programme was attended by Inspector I. Kharpran, Officer-in-Charge of the Women Police Station, Jowai; F.G. Rynnga, District Mission Coordinator, DHEW; along with officials and staff from DHEW and the Social Welfare Department.
Her journey from a small town in Meghalaya to the SAARC stage is a powerful reminder that with passion and perseverance, barriers can be broken and history can be made.
