The heavily security bandobast and imposition of Section 144 CrPC in Shillong City failed to deter the wits and strenght of the determined members of the Save Hynniewtrep Mission (SHM) as they reached in large number near the Main Secretariat and shouted slogans against the MDA Govt leaving the Executive Magistrates and the DSP and the heavily police personnel dumb founded.

The ‘Save Hynniewtrep Mission’ was formed on 24th October, last by the five pressure groups – Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), Jaintia Students Movement (JSM), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP).

They are formed for purpose of the implementation of nine-point charter of demands that include implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, review of reservation policy, inclusion of Khasi Language in the 8th Schedule of Constitution, CBI investigation into the police killing of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew amongst others.

Heavy police deployment was observed in Motphran where fire tender and riot control vehicles were also stationed while similar deployment were observed in Khyndailad and IGP areas.

Police checking was in place in Kongong, East Jaintia Hills and Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills for stopping the members of JSM, HYC and EJNC to proceed to Shillong.

Despite all measures and arrangements, the members of the Save Hynniewtrep Mission were successful in defying section 144 CrPC, which bans assembly of more than five persons, against the state

The executive magistrates and cops unsuccessfully tried to ward off protesters by citing the clamping of prohibitory orders across the state capital but the protesters went ahead with the demonstration by gathering near the secretariat.

The protesters refusing to heed to the cops’ plea, raised placards and slogans against the state government and called for fulfilling all the demands before the model code of conduct (MCC) comes to effect in the state, which is going for fresh polls next year.
