SHILLONG: BJP South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai has threatened to quit the party if the Narendra Modi-led NDA government fails to exempt the North East states including Meghalaya from the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 within one month.

“I have decided to serve a one month ultimatum to the Centre on the matter failing which I am ready to resign from the BJP because for me the interest of the indigenous people comes first,” Shullai said.

The three-time legislator made the announcement at the Dorbar Bah Ki Khun Hynniewtrep, a grand assembly of the indigenous Khasi people, organised by the 14 NGOs under the banner of the Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) on Thursday.

Shullai also informed that he had also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his intervention into the need to exempt Meghalaya and other NE states from the CAB on January 11.

“However till date, I am yet to get any response from the Centre. Therefore I will again to go to New Delhi on Tuesday next to submit this ultimatum,” he said.

The MLA also said he has taken up the issue not because he is afraid of elections but he is concern about the negative impact that is awaited if the citizenship bill is implemented by the Centre.

The CAB passed by the Lok Sabha recently seeks to provide citizenship to immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The grand assembly held at Students’ Field, Jaiaw was attended by over 40,000 people coming from the different parts of the state.
